Rollator Repair Corps
We are looking for health professions students to join the first cohort of our Rollator Repair Corps! Learn a new skill and make a difference in the community!
Interest Meeting: Thursday, January 18, 5:30 - 6:00 pm
What is a rollator and what is the Rollator Repair Corps?
A rollator is a four-wheeled walker with a seat. They are used for balance and stability while ambulating.
The Rollator Repair Corps is group of trained volunteers who do rollator repairs for free at community pop-up clinics.
Why do rollators need to be repaired?
Many older adults and people with disabilities rely on their rollators for mobility both inside and outside of their home.
Like cars and bikes, rollators wear out over time and with use.
Some DME shops will do rollator repair, but that option is not always accessible to all folks.
Loose brakes and worn wheels pose safety issues to rollator users.
Who can join the Rollator Repair Corps?
At this time, only clinical health professions students are eligible to join the rollator repair corps. This includes:
OT, PT, pharmacy, nursing, and medical students.
Additionally, if you already are health care professional, you’re welcome to join us too!
If your profession isn’t listed and you think you should be included, shoot us an email.
Where are the pop-up clinics and how often do they occur?
Wherever and whenever, there is a need!
Richmond Aging and Engaging coordinates with senior housing, health fairs, and other community organizations to schedule pop-up clinics.
While we’re just getting starting, we’ll have at least one pop-up clinic a month, but as capacity grows (i.e. we get more of you trained!) the more clinics we can schedule.
What is the time commitment to join the Rollator Repair Corps?
Initial training requires ~1 hour of on-line didactic instruction, plus at least one in-person hand’s on session (the amount of hand’s on practice will depend on how quickly you pick up the skills).
There is additional training available for advanced-level skills.
Once you’re completed the basic training, we ask that you commit to attending at least one pop-up clinic every 6-months.
I’m not mechanically inclined and have never held a pliers in my life, can I still join?
We welcome anyone willing to get their hands a little dirty and learn new skills – no prior experience required.
