Opening Minds through Art
OMA is an intergenerational art program. Student volunteers are paired with older adults to guide them through art making. Using a "fail-free" process of layering several easy steps, OMA artists are able to create incredibly beautiful, complex abstract art pieces. OMA supports the well-being of older adults with a focus on relationship-building, active engagement, sense of purpose, and accomplishment.
What will I do as an OMA volunteer?
OMA volunteers are paired with an older adult and will guide the older adult through the art making process
OMA volunteers are trained on the process so no art experience is needed!
Between moments of art making, OMA volunteers will have the opportunity to chat with and get to know their artist - hopefully building a valuable relationship.
In addition to art making, OMA volunteers will help with set-up and clean-up of each session
There is additional opportunity to assist with the end of program art show
What is the time commitment required of OMA volunteers?
OMA is an eight-week program (plus an art show). Volunteers are expected to attend all sessions (that allows participants to really get to know the volunteers!)
Each weekly OMA session runs approximately 1.5 hours (this time includes set-up/clean-up and about 1 hour of art-making with the older adults)
A 90-minute in-person training on the OMA process is required.
Who can be an OMA volunteer?
Anyone 18 years old or older can be an OMA volunteer!
When does the next OMA session start?
